Bangladesh Eyecare for children (£30)
£30.00
In Bangladesh, many children sit in classrooms unable to see the board clearly because they need glasses — and their families can’t afford an eye test or spectacles. With your support, we can provide children in Bangladesh with:
-
Basic eye tests / vision screening
-
Eye medication if needed
-
Prescription glasses
When a child can’t see the board, they can’t fully participate. Refractive errors (like myopia/short-sightedness, astigmatism, and hyperopia/long-sightedness) are common, easy to detect with a basic eye test, and usually straightforward to correct with glasses — but cost and access keep many children untreated.
Bangladesh evidence of unmet need:
A 2025 study of schoolchildren (ages 5–18) in Sylhet division reported:
-
Refractive error prevalence: 5.3% (5.3 per 100 children)
-
Higher prevalence in urban areas (9.9%) vs rural (3.9%) and tea garden communities (2.1%)
-
At the time of screening, only 15.7% of children with refractive error were already using spectacles
That gap means many children are trying to learn with preventable visual barriers.
Why this matters: education and life chances
There is strong evidence that providing glasses can improve learning outcomes:
-
A large school-based cluster randomised trial found a vision programme improved reading scores over one year among students needing eyeglasses.
-
A randomised trial reported that providing free glasses improved mathematics test performance in children with myopia.
-
A systematic review found spectacle correction is associated with improvements in children’s cognitive/educational wellbeing and quality of life outcomes (based on the available studies).
