In Bangladesh, too many mothers and newborns begin life without the basics needed for safe feeding, hygiene, and recovery after childbirth. National data still shows high levels of child undernutrition — including 28.0% stunting and 9.8% wasting among children under 5 — alongside 36.7% anaemia in women aged 15–49 and 27.8% low birth weight. Your £30 helps provide a practical Baby & Mother Nutrition Pack to a pregnant woman or new mum who cannot afford essentials.
Why we launched the Bangladesh Baby & Mother Nutrition Packs
Pregnancy and a baby’s first months are the most fragile window of life — and they’re also when families living in poverty are most likely to go without essentials. Even where healthcare services exist, many mothers cannot afford the everyday items that protect a newborn’s health and dignity: safe hygiene products, nappies, and feeding essentials.
Bangladesh has made progress, but the nutrition challenge remains serious. The latest compiled country profile data shows:
-
28.0% of children under 5 are affected by stunting (chronic undernutrition)
-
9.8% of children under 5 are affected by wasting (acute undernutrition)
-
36.7% of women aged 15–49 are affected by anaemia
-
27.8% of infants are born with low birth weight
These pressures are felt most sharply in the earliest days of life. Bangladesh’s neonatal mortality rate is 20 per 1,000 live births, and under-five mortality is 31 per 1,000, highlighting how critical newborn care and early support are.
