Bangladesh Wheelchairs (£99)
£99.00
Your support helps us provide a wheelchair to someone in a poor community in Bangladesh who cannot afford one — helping them move safely, attend school or work where possible, and regain dignity and independence.
Mobility is not a luxury — it’s the difference between inclusion and isolation.
For families living in poverty, a wheelchair is often completely unaffordable. Without one, people with mobility limitations may be unable to attend school, earn a living, visit a clinic, or take part in community life. This can trap entire households in deeper poverty and dependency.
What the data shows
-
Education exclusion is severe: UNICEF reports that 60% of children with disabilities aged 5–17 are not in education.
-
Children affected: UNICEF also states 1.7% of children live with a disability (as defined in national law), and 3.6% of children have functional difficulty in at least one domain (including walking).
-
Access gaps are common in low-income settings: WHO notes that globally more than 2.5 billion people need one or more assistive products, and for wheelchairs specifically, only 5–35% of those who need one have access, depending on the country.
-
A household survey in two districts of Bangladesh found that among people with self-reported difficulties, 74.7% reported unmet needs for assistive products, with cost and lack of knowledge about options/sources among the most common reasons.
