In Pakistan, thousands of people lose limbs every year — often due to preventable complications of diabetes (especially diabetic foot disease) as well as traumatic injuries. A Pakistan-based clinical study notes that diabetes-related complications are a major cause of lower-limb amputations in Pakistan, followed by trauma. The need is intensified by Pakistan’s very high diabetes burden. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that in 2024, 34.5 million adults (20–79) in Pakistan were living with diabetes, with an age-standardised prevalence of 31.4%.

When someone loses a limb, the consequences can be devastating: loss of mobility, loss of income, and dependence on family — often locking households further into poverty. The World Health Organization explains that prostheses and orthoses can enable people to live healthy, productive, independent and dignified lives, and to participate in education, work, and community life.
